I'm futzing around with having a 2nd mainsail set of reefing points put in my sail this coming winter. In the graphic, I'm thinking somewhere along the red line. I would like to be able to sail in stronger winds and with the standard reefing point, sometimes I feel uncomfortable when a gust hits the boat and knocks me over to the point where I'm feeling I might go "over" if I don't immediately dump the wind with my mainsail sheet.

I'm not looking for speed in gusting conditions as much as a relaxing trip on my lake. I'm wondering if anyone else has tried a 2nd reefing point and if so, how does it work out for you.

I use to tell my customers to reef the furling jib first, then reef with the use of dumping the sail. If it is still too much, I then suggested to come in as it was to rough to be out in small boat like the 170. I have sailed this boat in all conditions and this is the best advice to you unless you need to improve your skills.

I have installed but not use yet, a second line of reefing points because I am toying with sailing competitively again and I want as much control of my sail plan as possible. I have also installed a good clew outhaul, a cunningham downhaul and a strong vang to control the shape and therefore power output of the main. I have a great desire to be on the water and not in it.
However, I believe that Crazy Dave is providing a very good rule of thumb.

About how far up did you install the 2nd reefing points on your mainsail?

I would say at least 90% of the time I'm out on the lake, the standard reefing points are fine, especially if I have a sailing partner. When I'm solo, it can get medium hairy trying to reef and steer at the same time.

I just brought my mainsail to a local sail loft and trusted them to do it right. I don't think I'd push off if I had to use them but wanted them to get home safely if and when the big winds hit.
