mainsail reefing lines--need help

We just bought a 2006 216 and are having trouble rigging the reefing lines on the mainsail. Does anyone have a diagram???

Simple

There should be a line attached to the end of the boom to an eye. I leave mine permamenently on and just ball it up and stuff it in the end of the boom when not in use. Thread this line 1st through the reef point on the main that is located just above the clew. Then bring this line back down to the small pulley attached to the end of the boom and thread it forward along the starboard boom side through the eye all the way to the forward cleat and wrap it temporarily there. The other reef points are there only to keep a clean sail package on the boom by tying temporary sail ties through them. Keep in mind if you do this they are temporary, i.e., use yarn that can be broken easily. Why? Because the sail plan was designed as a loose footed main. You are now ready to raise the main, but not all the way to the top of the mast. Raise it 12 inches (or thereabout) from the top and then adjust the reef line at the forward boom cleat so that you pull the clew reef point down and to the rear of the boom. Cleat this line when you have your sail adjusted to your wind conditions and raise the main slightly to finish it off. Thread the cunningham thru the upper reef point above the tack and back down to the port side cleat on the mast just above the cuddy cabin to pull the leading edge of the main tight. Sail on brother.

Home made H216 "Jiffy" reefing

I made my own jiffy reefing system and love it. I don't have time for pics right now, but here is brief description: I used 1/8" Spectra or something like that. Mount port side eye strap and starboard side cheek block on boom under the leech reefing crinkle and 3-4 inches back. Put the butt end of a snap shackle in the eye strap such that a bowline knot on the reefing line can be "snapped" into the snap shackle. On mast, mount a appropriate block on same side as the new cheek block. On other side, mount a fair lead and somewhere below the fair lead, mount a clam cleat. Add fair leads as appropriate so the reefing line does not sag into the cockpit or whatever. Tie a bowline in one end of the reefing line. Note the bowline knot can actually be threaded through the crinkle and will be "snapped" into the snap block. Reefing line goes as follows (ignoring fair leads which the line obviously goes through): Clam cleat on port side of the mast thru luff crinkle thru block mounted on starboard side of mast back and through the cheek block on the back of the boom starboard side through the leech crinkle with the bowline clipped to the port side of the boom with the snap shackle. I have not tested my in a heavy blow but it seems to work great in my driveway (I have just completed the install). What I like about it: 1. Single line reefing on same side as the main halyard. Loosen the main halyard to pre-marked position, yank on the reefing line and cleat it in the clam cleat and viola, you are reefed. 2. The attachment to the leech crinkle acts both as a downhaul and an outhaul keeping a flat sail shape. 3. To knock down the sail, unsnap the bowline, pull it through the leech crinkle...at mast, pull reefing line out of the clam cleat and pull it through the port side mast block. Attach reefing line to boom with some type of tie. Setup and knockdown takes less than a minute. I don't bother to use the smaller crinkles to bind up the bunch of main below the reefing points. I simply let it hang there. Seems to work fine. Makes reefing and unreefing easier.
