Hi, It is extremely hard to pull out the outhaul line at the end of the boom. I have to yank hard on it just ot pull out a couple of inches to release the shackle in order to remove the main sail. Any ideas why? Thank you and regards Ed

Take a look in a Harken cataloge or their website. They have some really good diagrams of fairly simple systems. I changed mine to an external 4:1 system. It wasn't expensive and works real good.

Line to Wire

If you have a set up that transitions from line to wire inside the boom the splice may be coming apart and jamming on something.

One more question

Thank you for the answers and how do I remove the internal block and tackle? I assume that I must remove the boom and also remove the gooseneck end to remove the internal block and tackle? Thank you again and regards Ed PS. Or can I remove the fitting at the end of the boom and pull it out that way by releasing the outhaul line from the mast end?

H31_83-87 Mainsail outhaul

You did not specify exactly what H31 you have. I have a 1987 H31. When my outhaul died, I had to remove the goose neck from the mast and drill out the rivits. Then I found that the outhaul (wire) is attached to a pully (which broke) that had the control line going through it with one end tied to a loop that was rivited to the side of the boom. The other end (control line) came out the bottom of the boom, creating a 2 to 1 ratio on the control line. Would not have been able to replace the pully without taking the goose neck off. While I was in there I replace the outhaul control line also. Well, maybe some others could have replaced the pully without removing the goose neck, but not the control line. I took the "might-as-well" approach, might-as-well replace the whole thing while I had it taken apart. bill
