Hello, When sailing on a run or broad reach, with the boom where I think it should be, the mainsail on my 336 is laying on the spreaders. I have the topping lift loose, the boomvang pulled tight, luff and foot tight and just can't seem to flatten the sail. The boat has the short traveler on the steering pedestal. I have tried various trim combinations with no luck and with a concern about chafing of the sail I have been keeping the boom more inboard than I believe appropriate for these points of sail. Any suggestions? The mainsail is at least 7 years old. thank you, Bob Pilgrim

Spreader Patches
The B&R rig is a great idea but this problem is one of the downsides. Not having sailed with this rig, but one with moderately swept back spreaders (HL-35), it seems that what you're doing is proper. Perhaps someone with experience in this area could offer better advice. If you don't have any yet, one thing that would definitely help protect the sail is some sacrifical spreader patches. This isn't a cure-all as the relatively sharp bend of the sail cloth at the point of the end of the spreader is still harmful to the sail but the spreader patches will protect the sail from chafe. They don't cost that much to have added and would be well worth it.
