New-to-me 23.5..when lowering the main it will run out of the mast-track while I am geting the sail cover on. What am I missing here ? I know a bungie around the mast would solve the problem, but I am hoping there was a gizzmo that came with the boat that the previous owner kept for his new 26.

Sail track stops

Use a sail track stop in the mast groove. You will need to use sail slug slides for your main sail. Your sail needs to have grommets every foot or two where you can attach the slides. A sail maker can install these (recommended), or you can get the tools and parts from West Marine and/or US Boats. Good luck!

Pin

My 1994 23.5 has a pin that fits into a hole in the mast sail track, just above the boom. You just stick it in there and turn it 90 degrees to lock it in place. The think is very easy to lose, so I imagine that is what happened to yours. Check with Hunter Marine, I bet they have a replacement. Alan Long S/V Random Access

Or Try US Spar

Phone number is 904 462-3760 they also have a web site it is: http://www.ussparsinc.com/ Ask if they can put it in the regular mail, I ordered on of the plates where the mast raising cables fit onto the mast and was charged $5 for UPS shipping on a $6.50 part that could have been mailed for $.50. It is not much money it just sort of irks me after all that could have been a six pack.

Davis sail track stops, or...

Davis Marine makes three different sizes of sail stop. One will fit your mast track. Each one has a knurled wheel which makes it very easy to tighten in place or release. They work well, are very inexpensive and most sailing stores stock them. I use two on my mast, one above the gate (the opening where you feed the sail slugs into the track) and the other below the gate. The upper one holds the main up when the sail is down and the lower one keeps the lower two slugs in the track when the sail is reefed. They are both tied to the mast with a short length of dental floss to keep them from falling overboard. I also keep a third one below as a spare. It sounds like you don't trailer your boat much, so another option is to make up two strips of aluminum about an inch wide. The strips should be about three inches longer than the gate, with holes drilled at the top and bottom so they can be screwed to the mast. They should be attached (after the sail is fed into the track) so that the inside edge of each strip lines up with the edge of the sail track. To remove the sail, remove the lower screws and swing the strips out of the way. This method is nice because when the main is lowered the slugs come all the way down, allowing the sail to stow more neatly on the boom. You also won't have to mess with two sail stops when it's time to reef. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

Pin

My pin has a hole in it. There is a string through the hole and the string loop is riveted to the mast. The L shaped pin is always very handy on its string, but the first three times I set up the boat I did not know what it was for. Look for an L shaped pin made of stainless. It is about 1inch by 2inches and has a flattened part so you can fit it in the mast track. It may be in your boat among other gear already.

Davis Sail Stop

My 1995 23.5 had no sail stop. I bought the Davis sail stop from West Marine. The small, flat slide worked for me: West model # 108340. Mike Killian "Papa's Boat"

DIY stop

To make a DIY sail stop, use a short 1/4x20 oval head bolt and nut. Hank on sail then tighten bolt to track, just above sail slot. I used to use this on my Seaward. Good luck red
