mainsail ? hunter 27 1977 confused!

I have a 1977 Hunter 27 stnd. rig. The sail that the prev. owner had with the boat was not an OEM main. It measures Luff 30' and foot 8'9". As a result, the foot looks very short on the boom and the long luff brings the sail dangerously low to the cockpit. I have been thinking about replacing the sail, but.... the OEM specs. from hunter show the main luff at 29'4" and the foot at only 9'4". My boom is almost 11' long ( a 10'8") foot seems much more sensible. As a matter of fact, it looks like a catalina 27 main would fit better. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Go with your sailmaker

Choose your sailmaker, then let him fit the design to your boat. They all have the info on the Cherubuni h27, and he will want to see the boat if he is serious. The foot of our main (both the OEM, and the new Doyle) is probably a foot shorter than the boom. I don't know about the low boom. Once the sail is hoisted, and the boom is off the topping lift, it is the cut of the sail that determines where the boom rides over the cockpit. Ours is a few inches over 6 feet over the cockpit floor. Our gooseneck rides a few (6?) inches below the gap in hte slot for inserting the slides. Agian, though, I would trust my sailmaker for that dimension. The Doyle guys on this site are know the dimensions exactly, for instance. Do get a new main - tht is far and away the most exciting improvement we made to Lady Lillie. David Lady Lillie

David, was it you that had your mast step

removed and built up with a new wood core and new glass just under the step?
