Hey all, been lurking on the forum since I got the boat 2 years ago, but now that I have a question it's time to become active. Last time I was out my mainsail halyard gave up. I was surprised to find that it was all yacthbraid and no wire.

On my Cal20, it is recommended using wire or spectra for the main halyard to prevent stretching when the sail loads up.

What's the Manufacturer's recommendation for the H240? Will the mast hardware (stock US Spar) accomodate wire? If not is spectra necessary or worth the extra cost since the main reefs early on these boats?

Thanks in advance.

The factory spec is 5/16 Samson XLS. There are higher tech, lower stretch lines such as Samson XLS Xtra-T, but for the casual cruiser, XLS is a great, cost effective rope.

The higher tech lines are compulsory for racers, but are about 2-3 times more expensive.

I would not consider wire unless the boat had a sheave made to accept wire.

Thank you sir, that's exactly what I was looking for. I really didn't want to run wire.

I'm making the safe assumtion that this boat does not come with a wire sheave in the mast head as standard equipment.

I concur with that conclusion as that came up for discussion when the redesigne of the 23.5 into the 240. Warren Luhrs agreed with my assesment to leave it as is with the delrin sheaves for the above stated reasons. Warren use to own Hunter.
