Hunter 29.5 Merritt Island, H 29.5, Miss Faith
Hello again. I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new custom dacron sail for my 29.5 Hunter, with around 10% less sail area in the roach which equates to about 34.5 square feet reduction. The P & E are the same as a standard sail, and there are no other differences.Sail comes with full adjustable (Rutgerson) heavy duty battens, and Rugerson batten cars. The boat is 100% cruising used, and will doubtfully ever be raced seriously at all (not in my ownership anyway) I theorise that the give-up in light air performance (in say 4-7 kn winds)is countered by better performance (i.e. less tendency to round up which means less weather helm)in the 12-20 knot range which is the most common wind range in these parts, and probably not requiring a reef until about 20 knots. In performance, I also consider a lesser heel angle due to less sail area keeping the boat more on an even keel attractive (well, the Admiral does). Any thoughts or is my theory balloney?????? Thanks Neil

Reefing is normal

If reefing is normal tuning of the sails to match higher winds, then more, well-cut mainsail area is better. If reefing is difficult, or unusual, then giving up light air performance for a sail that fits your sailing is a good choice. We went for more sail area, and more frequent reefing.
