Does anyone with an O'day 322 have a picture of how the tack of the mainsail is attached? The system on my 322 is jury rigged and I'd like to fix it so it's right. Thanks

Try the folks at Rigrite..

John, I am not sure what kind of mast / boom setup you have, and that is going to be the key to answering your question. A good place to start is the site www.rigrite.com. They have an awesome website that covers many makes and models of spars and parts. The site has cross sections of each mast and boom to help identify what you have, and a lot of great pictures. Their number is on the site, and the sales staff is very knowledgable. Hope this helps. Bob s/v Simple Dreams Chicago

Can you post a photo?

Hi John - Perhaps you could post a photo here showing how your tack is jury-rigged. I don't have access to another 322 or I'd post a photo. How bad is the jury-rig? If it's obviously not original, let us see if we can offer some advice to make it right. Trevor

Mainsail attachement

Here is a pic of a very ugly thumb (don't ask *L*) and the way the mainsail tack on my 322 is attached to the boom. Is this the way they are all supposed to attach? It seems a bit weak to me.

Nice thumb!

Hi John - Thanks for posting that photo. Looks like the setup you currently have would work fine, assuming the flat shackle added doesn't bind when the outhaul is tightened. If you are worried about it, I'd consider replacing that flat shackle with a beefier one. Other than that, I wouldn't be too concerned. Best, Trevor

Thanks

Trevor, Thanks for responding. We'll ease into sailing with that connection and see what happens. Do you have a 322? I just moved up from a Montgomery 17 which I trailer-sailed around the USA this past summer. No one foot-ites here, almost 2x itis! And still learning how the big boat operates so I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks again. John

John

Hi John, I don't have a 322, but have sailed a 272. I've experienced that 2x-itis syndrome myself, and lived to tell about it! I've sailed a number of O'days, but never owned one. For keel boats, I had an Islander 28 for a number of years, and then jumped to a Formosa 51 to live aboard with my wife! Big change, needless to say. After a couple years, we "downsized" to a Catalina 36. Great boat, but then I found my dream boat, a Taswell 43. I'm busy bringing her up to cruising condition, and hope to cast off one of these days. I learn a lot from everyone here and try to pass on some of my experiences where I can. Nothing like learning from those who have been there. Have a great time with your 322 - she's a great boat! Best, Trevor

here's to the thumb

Agreed; the set up looks fine to me. I sail an O'day 28 and I have a similar looking goose neck, so it should be OK. As to the thumb...looks like a man who isn't afraid to get right into things. Gotta' admire that. Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

ODAY 28 TACK SHACKLE

Mike I too have an ODay 28, and also have lost my tack shackle. Since I lost it on my first sail, and the boat was rigged by the previous owner, I have no idea what it looks like. I assume it's similar to the one pictured on this post. I can measure the size of the pin that goes through the boom, as well as the width. However, I don't know how long it should be. If your not on the hard, could you give me the length of the shackle, from the pin to the curved end? I have Isomatic spars. Thanks

Will do

Jerry: I am on the hard but should get up to the boat this weekend to pull the cover and I can measure the shackles, fittings etc and get a digital photo of the set up for you. I have Kenyon spars but the hardware may be the same dimensions regardless. If we don't get a blizzard soon I'll pull the cover and get you the info. However it's snowing like h__l out right now. Thanks. We're getting hit with the same snowstorm here in upstate NY.
