We should finally be able to get to Maine this summer for about 6 weeks.
What is the best guide book for cruising Maine?

" A cruising guide to the Maine Coast" by Taft, Taft, and Rindlaub is the definitive guide to the coast. The Maptech Embassy cruising guide to New england is also very good for ports. "The cruising guide to the new england coast by Duncan is also good, with text narratives but no charts, pictures,or services tables but lots of history

Hands down..

Plus let me know when the time gets close and I can send you the "tip sheet" of places that are a must do and that are over rated....... You have to swear to secrecy....:D

We'd appreciate that info, too!

Before heading Down East in '12, friends recommended as Chuck and MaineSail say, MapTech and Taft, Taft & Rindlaub. The latter is indispensable, loaded with great info. The trip was so rewarding, we're getting ready to head up there this summer. We plan to leave the southern Chesapeake in mid-May, poke along and be in Maine in early July.

All the harbors and towns we stopped in, we enjoyed. But there were so many we wanted to visit and missed, we really look forward to the return trip.

Let us know your itinerary - Casco bay and downeast are incredible sailing in July - if it ever thaws out!

Thank you, Chuck. We'll let you know. On the trip in '12, we stopped for two nights at Centerboard YC. We really enjoyed downtown Portland, the waterfront and, of course, detoured for a couple of hours at Hamilton Marine. We got as far as Blue Hill on that trip; hoping to go at least to Mt. Desert this time, if we can.

And, as you say, assuming there IS a spring thaw this year. Stay warm up there - as cold as it's been in VA this winter, I don't know how you get through a winter in ME!

Painkillers work for us, too! We took the Maine Hunter Sailing Association to the BVIs a few years back and all came back north addicted to Pussers....

It was my understanding that the Maine legislature declared that summer in Maine would by August 3 to 11th and then it would be winter again. Bring lots of Pusser's....

If you keep MS in painkillers, it could make for a wobbly guide.....

yeah, but mud season runs from may15 to Aug 2. We sail then, too. By August, the moose flies are active and you need to sail with a 12ga for protection

We are actually thinking we will get there!
Still on the Ches Bay but should make Maine by late July.
Please remove the lobster pots and clear the fog prior to our arrival. But have plenty of cheap lobster available for our mass consumption.
Thank you

We've only made it as far as New Bedford but, with Arthur looming in the distance, we're relieved to be tucked inside the hurricane wall and gates that guard the harbor here. We're having so much fun poking along--see our blog at www.steadfastsail.net--we may not make it to Maine this time. It's great to enjoy a couple or three days in each of these beautiful harbors along the way.

had a fantastic day Monday in Casco bay, winds 20-24kts and calm seas between the islands (a Casco bay feature)! Double tied escape today just in case but winds are not supposed to be that bad - but rough seas forecast until monday. Fog removed per your request, unfortunately we had to eat all the lobsters as we removed the pots. come anyway, it's beautiful sailing!
