I'm considering a bareboat charter in Maine. What are the best areas? Time of year? I'm thinking first half of September. Thanks. Bob

Maine rocks!

I will be taking 2 weeks in the beginning of Sep. this year. That is the best time. Good wind, kids in school and cool nights. I cannot wait. I can direct you to some great spots with a little more info. Where are you starting from? Do you prefer anchoring, mooring, or slipping? Eat on shore or on the boat? What do you like to do on shore? Hike, shop, bike ride, others? Do you like the more crowded places or do you like to have an anchorage to yourself? Tim R.

Not sure where to start, or where to charter out of. As far as the other items you mention I would answer all of the above. You can email me at: rfrye1@cox.net Thanks. Bob

Hinckley Yatch Charters

Far and away one of the best places anywhere to sail is the Mount Desert Island area of Maine. Hinckley run a charter service with a small fleet of sailboats, mostly Hinckleys and a few others thrown in as well. I have sailed this area for many years now, most recently (2004) buying my first sailboat and cruising from Massachusetts all the way to the Canadian border. You will not be disappointed.

There are a few outfits..

The first two weeks in September can be very nice but we prefer the last two weeks of August because things are still open. It's amazing how quickly things shut down after labor day in Maine. In addition to Hinckley, Morris Yachts does charters as does Yacht North Group & Northpoint Yacht Charters. Most want to see a fairly extensive sailing resume because these are charter brokers for owners boats. Unlike Sunsail or Moorings where you make boat payments & they control your boat owners seek out these brokers to defray the cost of boat ownership. In most cases the owner has final say on a sailing resume. You'll want to list experience in dealing with fog, ded reackoning & navigation among other things. maine can be very foggy and has lots of uncharted rocks but it is beautiful. I would suggest chartering out of MDI at either Morris or Hinckley or in the Penobscot Bay area Yacht North manages boats all along the coast. If you would like to see some Maine cruising photos check out the photos at "related link" the other links are the charter companies. http://www.northpointyachtcharters.com/gallery.html http://yachtnorth.com/sail-charters.html http://www.morrisyachts.com/charters.html
