I believe I have a main sail traveller that is original equipment. The stbd Harken #132 Big Bullet Cheek Block is bent. The plastic at one end has broken leading to a torqued block. I have ordered a new replacement. Does anybody know how I can best checkout the effectiveness of the traveller? Unloaded, the car seems to move fairly well. I just know that in a beating windward condition the traveller is difficult to adjust. For all those out there with sage advise to replace the entire traveller with new equipment, save your energy, that is not in the budget nor of interest. other ideas and suggestions? :) I am considering using a silicone spray to lub the rollers and track.

Your boat probably did NOT come with Harken equipment. If you can verify the mfg, you may be able to get a replacement car for the track.

I suggest that you remove the car and see what is going on inside. The old Harken stuff had loose derlin bearings and maybe some of them are missing.

Is your traveler in the cockpit or on the coach roof?

Have to agree with Steve. I never heard of a Cherubini with anything but a traveler with pin blocks. But then the H36 was a bit different. Around 1981 or 82 the H37C moved the traveler from the bridgedeck to the cabin roof. Did the H36 go through that? There are a couple of pictures in "Boat Info" where the travelers are up top.

Steve, looking at some on YachtWorld it looks like they are all up top and DO have blocks and cars.

My 81 has the traveler still located on the bridge deck.

The traveller is on the coach roof. The car has small SS rollers and the outboard ends of the traveler has a sheave for the return turn of the adjusting line. The final outboard turn is on the harken block I mentioned. I'll try to get a few photos tomorrow to post.

Here is the Harken block. Note the end of the traveller with a machine screw mounting the sheave.

The traveler car, 2nd pic, has rivet mounted rollers. I have no further info at this time.

Photo With Another Configuration

Re the OEM 1980 H36 traveller. I once tried to take it all apart for the heck of it. But all the screws/bolts are rock solid after 30 years and won't turn .. even after a few days of liquid wrench and for a couple of bolts I even put the propane torch to them. Its the SS vs Aluminum thing. So Jim, apart from the budget, replacing the car's bearings etc might prove to be more effort than its worth. If you're looking for a jump start, I instead would explore different block arrangements. See below. This is the time of year when marine flea markets and swaps happen. With some imagination, you might be able to pick up all the needed blocks and shackles for not much more than one block would otherwise cost new.

Attached are photos of the setup of my 1980 H36 as configured when I bought it. (The lines are new.) The traveller car, the rail and the end sheaves are the same as on Jim's boat. Looking at mine, I have no doubt these are original. The deck top is molded exact for the rail and the end sheaves. When I bought the boat, all the gelcoat in the area was original with no indication of filled holes.

What is different from Jim's are the Harken blocks. A PO installed mini Harken doubles, so I get a 5:1 purchase. The car moves easily when the mainsheet has little tension, but friction increases if the main sheet is under pressure. If the wind isn't too strong and I haven't cranked in the mainsheet to high tension with the winch, I am able to pull the traveller to windward without too much difficulty. My traveller car does look sound. I don't think its about ready to fail.

Correction: on sleeping on this, I discovered I was initially incorrect on the ME:

Rardi, Thanks for sharing your excellent photos and setup. You have a better mechanical advantage than I do with you ME of 5 and mine being only 3.

I have a snap mounted on the side of the cabin top, so I'm guessing that the additional single blocks I have may have been used to relocate the lines closer to the cabin top for the addition of a dodger that was no longer on the boat when I purchased her.
I could get two double blocks and move my existing car blocks outboard and put the doubles on the car and get a ME of 4. I'll have to mull on that a while.
I could also do away with the Harken singles that may be improperly loaded as mounted on my boat.
Thanks, That helps. :)
