I'm trying to order a new Main sail for my 1981 Hunter 27. This is my first time ordering a sail. The owners manual gave me the measurements that the sail maker wants, the only problem is the foot size the manual gave was 9'11" and my current main sail is 9'2". The boom is not long enough for a 9'11" foot. Needless to say I don't trust the manual. The mast is off the boat so measuring the rig would be difficult. I asked the sail maker if I could send him the old sail to go by. He said that the old sail is stretched so that’s not a good idea. Anybody got any ideas?

Measure the rig!

The key main dimensions are length of the boom, and lengthe of the mast from the gooseneck up. You should be abl to get both of these measurements with the mast down. I've seen that a few variations in the original manufacture (not many really) and the unknown actions of prior owners mean that there is no substitute for measuring your rig! None of us know what your rig actually is. The new main for our '77 h27 was the single most important improvement we made to her. More speed, less heel, and less weather helm. So take the time and effort to get it right now! David Lady Lillie
