Does any one have any suggestions on mainsheet rigging for a Cat 30 that actually allows the boom to swing out freely when going off on a run. I have the typical midboom sheeting with the traveler on the doghouse and sheet running to the mast and back to a winch. Has any tried to eliminate all the line to the mast and back by replacing the fiddle block above the traveler car with one that has a cam cleat that leads directly into the cockpit. I would assume eliminating the excess running to the mast and back would let it run a little more freely. I also wondered what type of line people may be using to help reduce the friction through the blocks. Bill

Catalina 30 mainsheet

I had a 1987 Catalina 30 with the flat traveler track. I replaced the traveler and mainsheet saystem with all Harken hardware. I started with the mid-size traveler system and attached Harken track on top of the existing traveler track. The traveler ends swivel and it has fairly decent purchase. On the traveler car I piggy backed a double block with becket on top of a fiddle block with a cam cleat. I mounted a spring at the base of the fiddle block to help hold up the blocks when off the wind. I had three attachment bales on the boom. I believe I mounted a double block on the forward bale and single blocks on the center and aft bales. I used 1/2 line (for good handability) for the mainsheet. This system gave me a 8:1 ratio. Not being able to use a winch in this application, I felt this ratio was needed. I found that this system worked pretty well up wind. I never had any kinks in the line. Down wind I was able to ease the sheet out with only minor resistence. This system did have a few minor draw backs. In heavy air it could be diffulcult for some people to get the mainsheet really flat, even with a 8:1 ratio. You also had to be able to permanatly adjust the angle of the cam cleat-the wrong angle did not allow for adjustment of the mainsheet. Another draw back was that sometimes to adjust the mainsheet, you had to stand in the companion way hatch with one foot on the ladder and the other foot on the galley counter top. So much for a sanitary counter top! Also with a dodger this system is completely out! To summarize I liked this system and it worked well for me, but I had to live with it's drawbacks and cost. I also imagine any type of hardware could be used for the same effect. Good Luck!

preventer/guyline....

I have rigged a preventer or guy to allow me to pull the boom forward in light air conditions. Attach a block to a location forward of the mast. Attach guy/preventer line from the end of the boom forward throught the block and back to the cockpit. If you rig a one for each side it's easier to go jibe to jibe. The preventer and mainsheet work like a the foreguy-afterguy setup on a spinnaker pole. I leave the preventer/guy clipped to the lifeline when not in use. Heavier conditions require a different preventer setup, but then there should be sufficient pressure to push the sail boom out anyway.

what year is your boat?

I have a 1982 with a ridged boom vang and a dodger to make life a bit more complex. I also have the original curved traveler that makes life a bit harder. The way the block attaches to the darn traveler does not allow it to have a straight run when the boom is out all the way. So the line goes through the block at an angle creating more friction. I think the newer straight travelers have a better design in this aspect. I have replaced all my blocks on the mainsheet routing. I put in non swival blocks on the boom to reduce the tendancy to twist. I dumped the block at mast end of the boom to route the sheet along the boom vang. I changed where it is lead back to to reduce all the friction I can. I also replaced the mainsheet with new rope (1/2 inch) to reduce drag more and it is one size smaller than it was before. I finally have it so that in all but light air the boom will go all the way out. None of my fixes took tons of money. I sure would like that new traveler, but cant' justify the cost for now.
