I have 89 30 88-94, I have to pull the sail fabric in order to get the main sail to drop from the half way point. Is this normal, I looked to see if the slides were dirty or deformed, appears to be good, thought of applying oil or wax. don't want to make a mistake or problem worst.

Use a silicon spray

Use a silicon lub spray. It works so well you don't want to use to much. Just spray the slides and the track as far up as you can. I usually do this every few seasons.

Clean the slugs and the track

Matthew: Clean the track and the slugs first. Any slugs that are deformed should be replaced. Then lubricate the track and the slugs with McLube. You should see a marked improvement. Another problem area is sometimes the halyard will absorb water and cause a lot of friction. The may call for a halyard replacement. I would clean up what you have before you look at anything else.

Had a Similar Problem

Checking and lubing everything I could reach didn't help. Got significant improvment after the yard replaced the masthead sheave. Noel Hasty s/v Principal Pleasure, H34

Use McLube for a fast drop

I used to have to tug at the main on my 40.5. I now use Mclube every few months and the main sometimes drops faster than I can keep up with (not a bad problem). All I do is spray it on the slugs when the main is down. Works great.

Dropping your mainsheet

Unless your sailing in zero gravity, the mainsheet should just fall to the deck when you drop it :) Har Har Now lowering the mainsail with the halyard is a different show. As with all the below advice sometimes it pays to check the tune of your rig. Cheers Rick s/v Whiskey Chaser
