My C30 is set up with a self tailing #16 winch on the right and left cabin top to use on the main halyard and I assume the main sheet. I can set the halyard by use the clutch that the halyard goes thru and I can set the Main Sheet on the selftailing winch but is that good enough. Do I need a Cleat to secure the main sheet to to make it easier to adjust and to relieve the force on the winch. Anybody!

No Cleat needed

My C27 had pretty much the same arrangement - self tailing winch serving both the main halyard - which was equipped with a clutch - and main sheet. The only time I wished I had something to secure the mainsheet other than the self tailing winch was when I was using the winch to raise the halyard. I thought about installing a clamcleat and actually bought one but never installed it. For the two minutes of use when raising the main, I just secured the mainsheet to the genoa cleat and didn't worry about it. For all the rest of the time, I kept the mainsheet on the self tailer and it worked just fine. On the C350, there is a clamcleat installed so that I can temporarily secure the mainsheet when using the winch for one of the other lines. Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

Spend the (max $200) and get a double clutch

I would (and did) spend the money and get a double-clutch for that spot. It made life so much easier. And while everything the others said is true and may work, consider this... you're in a stiff (and I mean SF stiff) wind and putting up your main... you're main sheet is loose because you're raising your halyard.... the wind shifts.... BAM! You're head is now either over the boat or the size of a watermellon. It is much easier to lock down the main sheet, raise the halyard with the winch, lock down the halyard, wrap the main & unlock. Much safer too. At the very least I would put a cleat down, or a jamb cleat in-line with the sheet. Oh, and I also agree... the winch - itself - is fine. Hope this helps!
