Last year I purchased a '95 336 which we love, but have difficulty raising the main. Is there any tricks besides making sure that I am into the wind? It is a real horror!

Things to try:

1) Be sure you're pointing directly into the wind. 2) Be sure the vang and main sheet are released and free to run, otherwise they will make it hard to raise the sail. 3) Try some McLube "Sail Kote", it's a teflon spray that helps quite a bit to reduce friction on the sail track. It really shouldn't be TOO hard to raise the main. I've got a 340 which is pretty much the same boat you have and can often just haul it up without a winch at all. If it's super hard to crank up better stop and figure out what's wrong, you don't want to break anything... If the sheet isn't free to run it does get very difficult about 2/3 of the way up. Good luck!

Follow Miles guidelines and........

clean the track before you McLube it. Be sure to spray the slugs and track. Also check the archives. This has always been a problem on the mid 80's Hunters thru the current models. Lots of things in the archives. I think if you release the topping lift you will get SOME relief. Also have the slugs on the sail checked for size. Maybe the sailmaker screwed up. Do you have trouble all the way up or just the top. Did you get full battens? If you got full battens did you get some type of batten cars (these replace the slugs in the mast)?

Raising the Main

I had a 336 in 1995. The sail was hard to raise. Make sure the sheave at the top of the mast is in good condition and keep the mast groove clean and well lubed with a silicone grease. It all helps. I now have a 376 and the sail raising is exactly the same deal. It is such a large sail and heavy. No way to make it very easy. Other than that a delightful boat.

Use Dishwashing detergent ...

Just got a 37.5 and the main was a bear! Someone recently suggested squirting a little dishwashing detergent on top of the slugs ever week or so. I did it and the main went up like silk. That's my solution for a while. Don

Detergent vs. grease

I second the motion for liquid detergent. Cut the stem off one of those plastic needle injectors used for West Systems, available in pairs at the ship's store for a couple of bucks. Detergent will wash away with the rain, while grease attracts a nasty dirt build-up that will only make things worse.

Reefing lines

When we first got our 37.5 in Aug. 2000. raising the main was a real chore until I rerouted the reefing lines.
