I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a 1986 H23. The 2nd owner has had the boat for 10 years and it still has the original main sail. What's the life expectancy of a Main?(It's alway been covered) How much does a new main cost? Mike

h23 main sail

I have a 1986 h23 with the original mail sail. Had it cleaned, battens repaired, added a second reef points and recut for proper shape three years ago when I bought the boat. All for about $250 Canadian. I am very happy with the local UK Sail loft and very happy with the boat.

Try Sailcare, Inc

Several Hunter owners have had good luck having their sails refurbished by a company called Sailcare Inc in PA. They not only clean, but restore the stiffness of the sail and do any repairs or alterations needed. Much cheaper than new sail. Phone # is 800-433-7245 or check their website.

Long lived Main

The original Neil Pryde main and jib on my 87 H-23 are in excellent shape. I had to replace some sail slugs when I bought the boat in 1996, but that was all.

Sailcare

The cost of refurbishing my mainsail on my Hunter 23.5 is about $175.00 at SailCare. I am waiting to get it back. I have heard good comments on them and they are very responsive to questions that I had. Only problem is that everyone seems to like them. They have an eight week backlog right now.

Having a new main built

Mike: I bought an '84 H-25.5 4 years ago and it had the original mainsail. How long a sail lasts depends mostly on how hard it was used and how well maintained it was in the off season. The previous owner of my boat rarely sailed, so the sails were in very good shape. I did decide this year to have a new main built. It should be ready next week. Shop around for prices from both national and local lofts. Most of the prices I got worked out to about $6.00-7.50 per sq. foot. Rich Brooks, Riverdancer
