Main sail traveller

Any ideas on how to improve this old system? I hardly use this because either the screws get stock or they are too loose and suddenly they slide! Would like to keep the rail and maybe just add a better way of adjusting?

I kept the original track and mainsheet attachment. I mounted a turning block at each end of the track and then fitted a small (6mm) braided line from the end round the mainsheet slide back to the turning block and then the same at the other end . A jamming cleat was mounted on the side of the cross beam in the centre. I simply pull the mainsheet slider to where I want it and jam the line in the cleat to hold it there. There is surprisingly little friction in the system.

The big advantage was I didn’t have to buy any track or fittings. The bits and pieces were all off dinghys that I have owned in the past. I even made the jamming cleat out of a bit of teak I had laying about.

I did a 2:1 harkin with hark in rail mounted on top of existing bronze track. Wish I had put a small plastic sheet between as I think the aluminum and bronze argue.

I also bought and installed a Harkin 2-1 main sheet traveller system.
I removed the original bronze track.

Fitting the new track involved *very* careful measurement..

I also fitted turning blocks to the car - making the system 4-1. Works very well.

Hi Mike, sounds like your solution fits my budget. Do you have a photo of the system? I am interested in how you mounted the turning blocks and also the shape of the jamming cleat. Guess its a 2way cleat somehow. Br Jesper

I modified the original setup, keeping track and slide, with some turning blocks and cam cleats. The line is continuous, so can be released and operated from either side. I found putting some dry lubricant on the track really helps lower the effort required. I have a Picassa Album HERE with some photos showing the setup. It worked well, although a new track with a new roller bearing car would be $uperior Peter.

Hi Mike

Doubt if the attached photos would be visible on
the Yahoo Group email. You have to add the photos to the Files Section or email
directly to Jesper. Please copy me in with the photos as well so I can add them
to the VAGB archive.

Cheers

Steve B
