main sail shape

I have a 1980 Catalina 25 tall rig and the main sail seems odd to me. When I fully raise the sail and lower the topping lift the aft end of the boom is about 10 inches below the forward end. This is of course in no wind and with the boom centered in the boat. I've owned this boat for 4 years and its always been that way. My previous boat didn't have a main shaped like this. I'm thinking of having the sail modified by squaring it up and removing 12 inches so that I can use the Bimini. I would likely buy a new main and keep the modified sail for when I want to use the Bimini only.
All thoughts are appreciated.

Sounds like the bolt rope may have shrunk... I'm guessing the "head" does not go all the way to the top of the mast either...?
