On my garage floor is a main sail that I have been modifying. It will be loose footed. This converts from since 1980 the arrangement that had 10 or so slugs/slides connecting the sail to the boom.

The foot length is 12 feet.

I do have a plan for a block purchase arrangement inside the boom. It will be a 10:1

Question: How many feet of "run-out" do I need? That is, if (say) max foot tension is 0", is 6" of slack (that is slack along the foot of the sail) enough? At 10:1, about 60" of line on the out-haul will be needed to change 6" of actual foot tension.
