Can anyone explain to me the most efficient way to reef the mainsail on the Catalina 22? Should I raise the boom? Is it necessary to adjust sail slides? I want to be able to easily take out the reef if the wind abates. Any advice would be appreciated.

several ways

The Catalina 22 Owner's Manual shoows one way, called jiffy reefing. If you usually sail single handed though, you could adapt that way into a single line reefing system that leeads to the cockpit. http://www.catalina22.org/manuals/mnl87/handbook.htm#4.1 Save this manual to your 'favorites'

Catalina Direct has a reefing kit. They also recommend a jack line on the mainsail that makes reefing much easier. Their mainsails have this feature but you can have your mainsail retrofitted with one by a local sailmaker. Link to Catalina Direct below.

Reefing Set-up

If your sail is set up for reefing, you just tie the reef lines around the boom and tie the outhaul. I use a bungy to keep the tack tight. Then raise the sail. It will go up about 2 feet less, giving you that all important lower center of sail area. If you were to raise the boom (i.e. have the sail all the way up), then the center of area will be much higher and contribute to lots of heeling. If you reef the C22 as I have initially described, it will sail fast and flat in 25 mph winds. Regards, Ted
