Anyone know of a manufacturer that builds add on mainsail roller furlers? I have seen aftermarket furlers that are entirely exposed mounted aft of the mast but I don't know who builds it. I want this type for my h36 because of the ease of maintainence. Thanks, David McKie

Boom furling

You might look into boom furling. It has many advatages over mast furling. We have a furlboom which we like and can be added to your boat. There are 2 others- leisurefurl and profurl. I think that the furlboom is probably the best. They are not cheap however.

Main furling

John, we have a 430 and are seriously considering adding furling capability to our main. Some questions: What size boat do you have? Was you furling system added later? How did you decide for furlboom over the others? Do you have the huge roach that I have - does that cause problems ( know I have to have the main recut) Will be interested to hear from you Pete Burger KAILANI

Furling Boom

Pete; In response to your questions: What size boat do you have? Was you furling system added later? I have a new 450 and the furlboom was original equipment. How did you decide for furlboom over the others? The furlboom has several advantages over the others available. My file on it is on my boat which is in the Bahamas and I currently am stuck in Missouri for 6 weeks. But some that I remember is that the furlboom can be reefed on any point of sail while the others can't. Also I felt that the mechanism was less complicated. There were several others also. Furlboom has information comparing the units. Do you have the huge roach that I have - does that cause problems ( know I have to have the main recut) I have a full roach on my sail. That is one advantage of all furling booms. It also has full batterns. It did take a while for me to get the boom angle adjusted right, but that is the only problem that I have. If you have any other questions my email is John.vanstone@columbia.dciinc.org

Might help...

I do not know who makes it, but if you called Forespar in So. Cal they would probably be able to tell you. They would have to work with these on their mast installations.

Boom Furling Article

You might take a look at Sailnet.com. Tom Woods has written an interesting article, available on-line (and free) about main furling.
