Main Hatch Cover seems poor sealing

I have just replaced the hatch boards on my 1981 with solid teak boards. I noticed a gap of each side of the boards where the hatch is over the fiberglass not the companionway. Seems like a likely entry for water in a heavy rain or seaway from the right direction. However I have never had any water in the boat from these. Is this the way it is designed or just poor manufacturing where it should have been tighter? Maybe some piece is missing from the front of my main hatch cover?

those gaps allow colonies of mud-daubers and hordes of spiders to come and go freely, but so far they haven't allowed any water to come in during storms.
