My main halyard is showing signs of wear. I believe it may be the original item. In the past 20 years, I have to believe that cordage technologies have advanced. Therefore, before replacing exactly what I have, I decided to ask around regarding selecting the best new material. Thank you for your responses.

If you have the 07 West Marine Master catalog they have an excelent "help" section on running rigging which explains all of the options available with pros and cons, a strech chart is included. I beleive it is in the "sailing" section.

small may be better.

Doug: I changed out my main halyard on our H'31 a few years back. It worked okay the first year and then it was difficult to raise the main. I switch it out from a 1/2 to a 7/16 and it made raising the main much easier. Hunter specs call for a 1/2 main halyard, but it is slightly oversized depending on the type of line you end up using. The smaller size was fine on the hands and made raising & lowering the main easier (less friction).

Steve's right.

I downsized my 35.5 to 3/8" line and it works smooth as silk. ;D PS I used spectra for almost zero stretch which is most important and is super strong. Double braid dacron does a terrible job of controlling stretch.
