Have a 27' tall rig 1979 Catalina. I want to rig the main halyard back to the cockpit, but am unsure of the ramifications, and installation. I do singlehanded sailing and safety's an issue for a 77 year old. I would like the minimum of hardware and turning points on the rigging(hopefully,no new winch, etc) but do want an effective rig. A main concern is attaching any hardware to decking; is this area of the deck solid construction? I will install backing plates. If not a solid deck, I would need spacers in the deck area between the overhead in the cabin and the deck, correcto? Please help with your recommends. Thanx, Jim Huhta S/V "SEA-130" Sturgeon Bay, WI.

Halyard to cockpit

I have had all my lines led aft on my C27 for 10 years. The deck is solidly cored near the mast and you can fasten a turning block there or on the mast itself with block made for just such a purpose. Mine is screwed in the deck and has not budged or leaked at all in ten years. The turning block (or line controller) back to the cockpit is attached the same way. The loads on that are sideways and it is not as subject to being pulled out. Again, I have 3 lines each on port and starboard that run aft to triple rope clutches on each side. I singlehand or shorthand often, and the C27 deck is just too small to be spending too much time on.

P.S. I do have a winch on each side also. It is necessary for the halyards. I just took them off of the mast and relocated them to the cabintop aft of the rope clutches.

I realize it's popular to run halyards to the cockpit and understand why but doesn't it complicate dropping the main short-or-single handed? And doesn't it make reefing a pain in the arse? Seems to me you'll be jumping around the deck considerably more in those two operations.
