Anyone got any recommendations for a replacement main halyard for a 1984 H31? I reckon it needs to be at least 96' long, but that is as far as I have got. I have always felt my present one was a tad too thick too. What is the best line to use for this, under a reasonable budget?

Ian, On my 1990 H-33.5, I have StaSet-X double-braid of 7/16" dia. for my Main halyard and Jib halyard. The StaSet-X has a low stretch coefficient.

On my 1987 Hunter 31 I replaced my main, jib and spinnaker halyards each with 120 feet of 3/8" low stretch Sampson XLS Extra each with an eye splice and cover and reeving eye. No need to go thicker and zero stretch. The extra length allowed me to bring all my halyards back to the cockpit.

Ian:

I had an issue on my H31 using 1/2" line also. I went to 7/16 and it worked much better. You may be able to go to an even smaller sized line with the new stuff on the market today. I suggest that you price it out on this site. They actually have the measurements for most of the lines on your H'31.

The prices here are very competitive.

I don't have any specific suggestions for your lines but do want to vouch for the chandlery on this site. I just replaced both the main and jib halyards with 5/16" Samson XLS. I chose custom lengths with an eye splice on one end. The site indicates that it could take up to 12 working days but mine were delivered within 1 week.
