Main and jib halyard winches

I have two small winches that I bought 40 years ago for another boat I owned. They do not have a provisionfor a handle are of a composit material and are abou 3" high and 2" in diameter. I was thinking of mounting them on the port and starboard side at the aft end of the cabin to use for my main and jib halyards. I don't like the idea of cleating the halyards on the mast in case I have to lower or chane sail for rough weather.

Any info or thoughts would be helpfull.

I ran mine back through a block at the base of the mast, then to a deck organizer where the halyards run back to a clutch just forward of the port winch. It is nice not to have to go forward.

You would still need a cleat or something to hold the halyards.
