I have to replace the main on my 1990 H-23. I am not sure if I want to use standard batten or a full battened sail. I club race and pleasure sail. any pros or cons regarding a full batten main?

Power Head Main

The UK Power Head Main will give you the best of both worlds. It has the top two Battens full length. In the world of racing full battens have not come into play very much. You could go with it and be just fine but would not be as fast as you could. E-mail me off site for a better responce. cliffr@bright.net Cliff

New Main

I had a new main sail made for my h23 last year. Full Batten at the top only, and open footed. The full batten helps the shape at the top of the sail and the loose foot allows for quick and easy adjustments of the outhaul. The new open foot mains are being made with what I call a boom sweeper. Its just additional cloth that hangs down from the foot of the sail and "sweeps" across the boom, thus holding a little more air in the bottom of the sail. You see most high tech race boats using this main sail design and it works great. Full battens are a matter of personal choice. I choose Full at the top only and happy I did. The sail is still easy to handle and yet I get good sail shape in an area that is hardest to control sail shape.
