I need to replace the Teak hadrails and Hatch Boards on my '84 O'Day 25 and am I going to mill them myself. I was just wondering if anyone has ever used Mahogany (since it is a lot cheaper) for these exterior items and how well it weathers vs. Teak?

What about other wood species as well?

I have just bought some iroco (also known as african teak) Many people use it for building swim platform on their transoms. It is much cheaper than teak and probably mahagony. The color is close to the one of teak. The only draw back is that it is not as dimensionally stable. you would only see a difference if you were building wide surfaces since wood has very little shrinkage parallel to its grain. I also plan on using iroco for building a toe rail on my o'day 37. Good luck

Mahogany will work

Mahogony is a pretty wood. It is a bit softer than teak so denting may be a problem. You will have to finish it. I like varnish but that statement will start a war with the cetol following. If you keep up with the finish, you will have no problems. If you let the finish go, you may start having some problems. Don Evans did his rudder out of mahogany and it's under water all summer.I think he made his rudder about three years ago. I think he used a polyester resin for protection. Anyway the mahogany is holding up. I also made new rails. I used teak and changed the configuration and glued the pieces with Gorilla Glue. It stands a little higher so that it is usable. You can get your hand around it. If you want I could post a photo. r.w.landau

I'd love to see the pictures

That would be great, I could use a new idea. The origional grab rails aren't to functional!

Hand rail

This is the rail upside down in one of the clamps. The rail itself is 1 1/4" x 1 1/4". The block is 1 3/4" high. Even though it is teak I have since varnished the rails. r.w.landau
