Magma Grill Protection

Dear Fellow Sailors:
I have a Magma grill I love using however I don't keep it permanently fixed to my railing in fear that it may be stolen. The problem with this plan is that I need to attached it to my railing every time I want to use it, which also increases the chance that I'll drop it overboard. Does any one have experience locking their grill to their railing and if so how did you do it? Wisdom appreciated, thanks.

I have the same issue. I just purchased a grill mount from a different manufacturer that is a basic universal clamp on. I plan to use this in addition to the Magna rail clamp for support, and the new clamp on screws will be swapped out with security screws that take a special driver (similar to NavPod screws).

One solution: install a fishing rod holder in your gunwale and replace the rail mount for the grill with a fishing rod holder mount. That will allow you to just lift the grill and mount out to store it. Google "magma grill fishing rod holder mount" to find the one designed for your style grill. (warning: they ain't cheap! Rod holder not included)

Also keep in mi d the debris (read crud) that will eventually fall into your cockpit while moving the grill. It makes no difference how careful you are. The crud will drop somewhere on to your boat. And the more conspicuous the place the bigger and nastier the crud. I vote ou find proper way to secure the grill and then let us know what you decide on.

Good point. Also, $50 - $75 for a holder vs some security screws?

Where do you dock that a Magma would get stolen from a rail mount?

And, to address Saab's original fear-moving the Magma from a rod holder just increases his concerns about the grill heading into Neptune's locker. The points about the ultimate mess that will, without doubt, deposit itself in the cockpit, along with finding a place to store the grill on the boat, magnifies the recommendation for a simple set of security screws.

Out of curiosity, just curious as to how prevalent theft from your marina is. I am shocked at how little theft occurs at my marina, which houses almost 1,000 boats. Boats, whether sail or power, are relatively easy targets, as locking mechanisms tend to be quite easily defeated. We have many larger power boats with expensive electronics, yet see a fraction of the theft rate that one would encounter in almost any land based location. I am far more concerned about the possible loss of high value items like stabilizing binoculars or night vision equipment inside the boat than a grill on the rail.

I swapped one of the handle nuts for a nyloc nut. Mostly because the handle would not swing past the vertical bar on the stern pulpit. I've had it back there soooo long that I've replaced all the parts below the grills. The outside, the drip pan and the grills still look good. I don't worry about someone stealing it. Or I didn't until now. :(

Good call, Wayne!
I am with the other guys....and we have a Magma grill cover. Removing the grill just for the winter introduces the black crud into the cockpit and locker. Even with a cover.
Nylocks are going on my railmount this year. Although we have never had a theft problem at my home port.
But we are sailing to South Chicago this year......

I found a solution for both problems (that works on our boat). We use the stanchion mount bracket and put the grill on the inside of a stanchion over the lazaret. No problems with grease falling on deck.

When the grill is cool, I slide a large old canvas bag with strap handles, over the whole closed grill, while it's still mounted. Last, I loosen the mount and the whole she-bang comes off, bagged. That goes in a cockpit locker (in fact it hangs from the handles).

To mount, I just reverse: while holding the bagged grill, I fit and tighten the bracket. Last, I slide the bag off, no mess on me or the boat.

A decent harbor and community however aren't there always those that would steal in every place in the world?

If you look on the rail mount handle...the lever that unscrews... it has a hole drilled through it. Put a small lock through the hole and connect a cable to the lock.

Most locks are good enough to keep the honest people out. ;-)
