I am trying to keep as much of the covered space in my tow vehicle for clothes and stores, so my outboard, fuel and other "hard" items have to ride the trailer. I have a galvanized MagicTilt trailer that is just an open frame with one floorboard for the keel and two bunks for the hull. Does anyone else have one of these trailers? Can it be modified by adding floorboards, a tool box and some kind of bracket for the outboard? Would it be better just to stow the outboard and other items below deck? I am trying to keep the weight down because the trailer has no brakes. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Peter S/V Raven

Just starting modifications to mine

I don't know which trailer I have, but it sounds the same as yours. I have the same problem with trying to haul the motor in the vehicle so I am just starting to add storage on the trailer. I am adding two brackets along the side to hold the rudder. This will be just from the front of the keel to the trailer winch. I am also building a box to put the outboard in. I have a 7.5 hp Merc. This box will fit just in back of the trailer winch and have a lockable lid. My plans that I drew up are for a box just large enough for the motor to sit in a cradle inside. The sides and top will be treated plywood and the bottom will be expanded metal screening. This is a heavy guage diamond pattern screen that you can purchase in 4' X 8' sheets. My thinking is to make sure all water can quickly run out when I pull the trailer out of the water. I thought about an open motor cradle, but didn't like the idea of it out in the open where it might be tempting to some one taking it. Will let you know how it turns out and would love to hear if others have thoughts that might be a better idea. Ward Niffenegger

Mine is slightly different

I have one for my H20. However, I have two sets of bunks, one for the hull and one set to guide the keel onto the center. My problem is that one of the keel guides has corroded off. I have it at a yard now hoping that they can fabricate a new one. Anyone have any guiding advice here? Les Murray H20 Limerick

I really only started messing with the trailer about two weeks ago, because the boat has been in the water since I bought it. I am beginning to suspect that MagicTilt may just be a brand name, as I have seen no sign yet of any tilting mechanism. The trailer tongue does extend though... Peter S/V Raven

Peter is correct

There is no "tilting" to this trailer. It is just the brand name. Other than the extendable tongue, it's just a frame with adjustable bunk boards.

Magic Tilt Trailers

The original Magic Tilt trailers from the 1950s apparently did tilt. I don't think any of the newer ones do this, but the name has stuck. I have one for my 1999 H260, so they are still in business and they do make them for "larger" boats. You may be able to get some questions answered about what modifications are advisable by requesting information through their web site: www.magictilt.com Good luck with your project! Ralph C. Mine does

My Magic Tilt does tilt. There is a pin and handle on the tongue that releases the tilting mechanism. It only seems to tilt when the boat has moved aft a bit. I don't find it very useful. An extendable tongue would be much better for those shallow ramps. Les Murray H20 Limerick

Trailer Modifications

When adding storage onto your trailers be careful of first overloading the trailers weight capacity. Next a distribution change can have an abrupt trailering change. I have experienced some of these problems myself on other trailers. Good luck to all
