I have a Magellan 310 which worked fine last year but this year it will not initialize. New batteries make no difference. It starts fine, i have done the set-up as the manual indicates but it will only "find" two satellites no matter how long it sits in clear view of the sky. Any ideas on what be the issue? Thanks David

Magellan 310

I had exactly the same thing happen about a year ago. I had a Magellan 310 and a 315. The 310 would not start up, and when it occasionally did, would not initialize. The solution: Throw it away. You can buy a new GPS from any number of manufacturers that will do the same or more than the 310 for under $100. Even Walmart sells them. Electronics are disposable items in my view. I got a new Garmin (I won it actually) and use the 315 for the backup.

Make Sure the Location is Set

It needs to have an idea where you are. It also needs to have the time set correctly and maybe the offset from Zulu time. If all those are correct it maybe toast. I suspect it is somthing simple as it does pick up some satellites. If it was broke it would not pick up any at all.

Memory Battery?

Check to see if that model has a memory battery. If the memory battery is dead the unit won't be able to retain initial settings anf will default to who knows where. I learned the hard way. We were only a few miles from our harbor in dense fog when our memory battery failed. The unit defaulted to Lat and Lon of 0.0.0 0.0.0 but did indicate that we were on course and our scheduled arrival was a little over 18 days away. The memory batteries on most units last several years. They are usually internal to the unit and should be replaced by an experienced tech. If you are good with electronics and have a steady soldering technique you might try replacing it yourself as some units do require de-soldering and re-soldering. I guess the manufacturers were figuring on selling new equipment rather than have you continue to maintain your old reliable ones.

David, I had same problem

on my Magellen handheld. Didn't use it for a year then would not aquire fix. It would search after being initialized, but not find. I was going to chuck it then I did something, forget the command but it was to basically erase all stored routes, way points etc. Now it works fine. So look for something to clear memory. Scott

Buy a new Garmin

I made the mistake of sending e-mail and later calling Magellan for help. You will never find a group of people more sarcastic and less caring about a customers or customer support. After speaking to the fourth different person who started our conversation by offering me 15% off a new one before I had a chance to tell him my problem, I asked to speak to His supervisors and ended up speaking to someone Secretary. She was the only pleasant person I talk with out of 4 people in customer support service department. Needless to say I was very disappointed about the way I was treated and feel I need to pass this information along and just maybe prevent someone from buying anything from MAGELLAN in the future. I certainly would feel like they treated this customer and past customers like crap.

CUSTOMER SERVICE????

I bought a Magellan Roadmate for my wife. Most unfriendly software I've every come across. Instructions: "Raise the antenna." I did, it never found a satelite. Three words left out: Push it in. I tried Customer Service e-mail. Never got any response except the automated one that said they got it. Just try to register a new memory card. Try to find the 24 digit code. Anyway, you've got the idea.
