Ahoy everyone!!! My beautiful H34 (yacht) has finally made it to San Diego!! I was thrilled to see her sail in last week!! My beau and the guy that I hired said she did great!!....but now that she has had a chance to rest for a week I am finding a few things that have happend. First of all she has an oil and a diesel leak. I noticed that where the bilge is under the kitchen table, the floor has just softend. I thought it was a loose screw in the wood from underneath the bilge but once you put the bilge cover back on and try stepping on the floor cover it almost caves in, also I noticed that inside the boat up by one of the portholes the fiberglass has sagged or bent. Both of these things were not visible before the boat left seattle. Also I noticed that on the outside of the boat only on one side, there are streaks of rust or something orange discoloring the fiberglass. I can't believe that the screws rusted, and if they did what do I do to prevent this and can I get these colors off of the boat or is this permanent? I am just sick about it. Help? Anyone have these same problems on their 85 H34.5?

It can be fixed!

Susan: The problem with you floor was there and should have been caught during the survey. This is NOT uncommon. Water gets trapped between the grid and the floor and rots the wood. You need to move the floor (and a lot of other stuff too). When you replace the floor, be sure that the back side and edges of the sole is treated with epoxy. This will prevent the floor from getting wet again. Diesel leaks are common too. Call out the local Yanmar dealer in your area and have them take a look at it. Usually just a hose or washers, maybe a new fuel filter housing (assume that these are on the engine). Oil leaks are a different matter but they can be fixed. The problems with the portholes and the orange streaks are a different problem. You can try any of the common cleaners or order some Island Girl and see if that cleans her up. PS: You had a survey on this boat didn't you?

Rust Stains

Rust stains can be removed. On my boat the stains come from the ladder at the swim step. All stainless steel will rust to some degree, some types more than others so some rust stains can be expected.

Seatle to San Diego?

Susan, Can you or your beau give us more details about the trip itself? I'm interested in how your H34 did offshore. How far offshore did she go? How long did it take? What conditions did she encounter?

Break Out Another Thousand, it isn't that bad hang in there. The cabin sole can be fixed temporarily by using plastic pipe and flanges. Under the bilge hatch you cann prop the pipe and flanges under the sole and run a board across them to allow you to step without causing other problems. The sole needs to be replaced but now you can do it at your convenience. Get diesel leaks fixed asap. Diesel eats the rubber in your motor mounts rather quickly. Motor mounts cost over $100 each and must be replaced in pairs plus realigning the engine. Spilled deisel cleans up very nicely with Windex right out of the bottle on hands and engine. Use some CorrosionX too. Sagging fiberglass around ports can be from a whole bunch of things. The worst might be the cabin top being rotten. Walk around on the cabin top and deck any soft spots indicate problems. Rust on one side could be the screws or just the weay the boat was tied up. Stuff grows differently on one side of my boat due to sun/shade/whatever. If it sailed from Seattle to San Diego, clean it, fix it when you have time and money and enjoy it.
