I recently purchased a Macgregor 26c. I don't have the boom pin to connect the boom to the mast. Do you know where I can find one. Mike

Stainless pin

I had a couple of those pins that got a little chewed up with the stainless bolt. The threads of the bolt cut into the pin. A friend made me some out of stainless. So far no wear. The "J" bolt had also become bent several times, so I replaced it with a stainless "eye" bolt. I now use a stainless Carabiner when needed to attach to the reefing point.

I concur

Mike B., I agree. I had assumed that Mike was referring to the horizontal pin that links the gooseneck and boom. I assume that you are referring to the vertical keeper pin. Either way, I believe a compilation of our thoughts should fix the issue. I, like you, use an eye bolt and attach there for reefing. If, in fact, Mike is referring to the horizontal pin that links the gooseneck and boom, then my suggestion of cutting a stainless bolt, necessarily includes cutting off any threads and using only the smooth portion of the bolt.

I am refering to the vertical pin that holds the mast to the boom. Maybe that is called the gooseneck? The previous owner was using a bolt. But the Macgregor owners manual shows what looks like a J bolt. Is there a web link to the Macgregor factory for parts?

Upgrade or Original

Mike, Now I understand. I'm not sure where you would get one unless it was through the factory. However, with the exception of wanting to keep things "original", either the bolt you have or, as Mike B. noted, a stainless eye bolt is just as good if not better. The secondary purpose of the "J" is to "hook" the front reef point on the main sail. I've had two Macs and both had the "J" hook on them and both were bent too severely to hook the reef point when I got them. I found them difficult to adjust while the boom was attached making reefing problimatic. The eyebolt and caribiner or something of that type is actually an upgrade. I'm not sure how much experience you have with sailboats, but this explaination is intended to reassure you that failure to have that part does not degrade your boat or its performance. All of us "personalize" various aspects to suit us better. If you still want the "J" and can't find one, then using a stainless eyebolt that you have cut and reshaped will accomplish thw same thing. And if you do it carefully, no one will ever notice it is not "factory". Good luck!

The "J" pin for lack of a better word is part of the reefing system like Mike B has indicated. At least it is on the 26. Unless you have a different way to reef, you need the hook.

Single-line reefing

My single-line reefing mod on my 26D does not utilize the hook at the front for reefing. The whole point of that system is to keep someone from having to go forward to reef.
