I have a 1982 MacGregor 25 with a mast step that was torn out prior to purchase. I would like to know how the step was originally attached on the inside and if there is a better way to attach it than the factory application. Thanks very much!

mast step

Assuming that my step was mounted as original, it was four bolts through the cabin top. One of the bolts was through the L-bracket at the top of the compression post. All bolts had large fender washers on the inside. If yours has torn loose I would suspect either a catastrophic event or rot that weakened the deck around the step. I just had the core on mine replaced because the P/O's didn't keep the mounting hardware sealed well. I have also upgraded to a hinged step and mast raising kit. The hinged step adds two more mount bolts at the cabin top and makes the mast somewhat more stable when raising.

My '84 25 is stepped like J discribes and I highly suspect it is original as the PO didn't do much in the way of maintenance or upgrades. J, where did you get your hinged step and what did it cost?

hinged step source

I got my hinged step through MacGregor a couple of years ago. I can't remember what it cost, so it must have been reasonable. I think it is the same as the one on the new 26. It seems to work better being hinged than the old one did with the slot. Mac's number is 949-642-6830. I'm sure BWY probably has something similar, among other sources. I've just had really good luck dealing with MacGregor so I go there first.

Hinged Step

I bought a mast raising kit for my 82 from BWY about 3 years ago. It included the hinged mast step, pole, and block and tackle. It's the MacGregor kit, so there's no difference who you buy it from. It was about $100 and included everything except the line. The instructions are for newer models, so you have to read them through a couple of times, but the installation was a pretty easy couple of hours. Like J. Barrett says, make sure you properly seal the mounting holes or you or the next owner will be recoring your top.
