Okay, so I'm new to sailing and eager to buy a boat. I decide I want a MacGregor 25 due to the nice things MaGregor owners say about them - and the low price. I call it the "Get a sailboat without getting a divorce" price. On Craigslist, I find a tan colored Mac 25, just forty miles away, in good condition. Good sails, good gelcoat and fiberglass, good trailer. Nice boat at a great price.

Yesterday, I began removing the oxidation from my "tan" Mac. To my dismay, I discover that my boat isn't tan, it's yellow - bright yellow! It looks like a 25 foot long bananna.

I think to myself, out of the hundreds of Macs I've seen on the internet, I haven't seen one yellow boat. In fact, I haven't seen a yellow sailboat of any make.

I can already tell that this boat will clean up very well. But, the more I clean, the yellower it gets. The previous owner named it "Joanna", though he never actually put the name on the boat. I'm thinking of calling my boat, "Chiquita", as in Chiquita Banannas.

Here's my question. When I take Chiquita to the lake, will I hear, "Hey, whose the dork with the ugly boat"? Or, should I be proud that I have the only yellow boat on the lake? The gelcoat is in too good of condition to consider painting the boat.

It looked tan - I swear it did!

Banana, not bananna. Oops!

Sorry, "banana" isn't a word I ever write. Since I now have a Banana Boat, I probably will.

I've seen some yellow sailboats and liked them. Forget everyone else, if you are happy that is the end of the story,

Sum

P.S. Congrats on getting the boat.

Gelcoat color?

Just curious, is the gelcoat actually yellow or has it been painted? I can't imagine they ever came from the factory yellow and it seems unusual if someone shot yellow gelcoat.

That yellow might look quite at home in the FL Keys or the Bahamas. A nice Chiquita logo might look cool. (I don't think the banana company would ever find out and sue you) :)

[after reading the post below, I guess in the "old days" you could order different colors]

Hey, let's see some pics! I'm sure she looks great!
Be sure to go through the proper ritual before renaming her, though - no sense in inviting bad luck.

My friend ordered a V25 with a yellow hull about 30 years ago and named it "DAY OH" Antoher friend ordered a red hull and named it CABOOSE. I'd pick yellow over tan and day. Tan is Blah. I like the idea of the name with the Chiquita logo. If someone else doesn't like the color, to heck with 'em. Keep us all posted. Fair Winds, Old Salt...

While My Mac/Venture is a pale Blue and looks OK, I prefer a Midnight Blue but resisted the temptation to re paint it as I did to my two previous (and smaller) boats. My newest boat, purchased as a secondary one for quick trips to different sailing grounds cleaned up real nice as a yellow and white hull(no pics of it yet). I'd go with the chiquita bananna logo....;)

Just a thought, you may want to do your initial screwups test sails on a different lake so people at your home lake don't remember "when the guy with the yellow boat..." :D

Seriously, what do you care what other people think.

I have a 79 venture 25 and she is Yellow. Looks great with the blue bottom paint I did this spring. Makes the boat easy to find and easy to see on the water. We even have 2 yellow kayaks to go with it. Now what I really didn't like was the plaid cushions in the cabin, had to cover those with some blue material quick. =). Enjoy the banana she has great a "peel" ( sorry I couldn't resist)

In regards to your yellow hull. Should be easy to get a "slip" and you can "Split" anytime you like. Sorry!! Couldn't resist. Yes the factory did gelcoat hulls yellow and any number of colors, Red, Blue, Green. Only problem with colors is that they oxidize quicker. Fair winds...

Kudos on the banana theme!! If anything, I'd do more to make it stand out - try a bright yellow sail or yellow with a bright red sunburst on it.
Give them something to really remember!!

Heh! The "Get a sailboat without getting a divorce" price. I love it!

Some say changing a boat's name is bad luck. Maybe, Joanna Banana? (Sorry.)

I've got a 73 Corvette in original Chrome Yellow. Not my favorite color, but that's what it came with from the factory, so that's what I've kept. When I first got it (decades ago) some wiseguy made a comment like, "Hey! Taxi!" I ignored him. It's a nice car.

Who cares what others think? They look strangely at me when I show up at the dive site wearing a steel 72 and a 50's vintage Aqualung DA regulator, too. I kinda like the attention, actually.

It's up to you. Unless you really don't like the color, I'd say go with it.

Of course, you could always paint some black checkerboard on it, and a Yellow Cab logo, maybe. Or not...

Best of luck with the new boat. Enjoy!

VBR,

Pat
