Impeller is jammed

If the impeller can't spin, the motor overheats and blows the breaker. Instructions for un-sticking the impeller are in the macerator instruction manual, which--if you don't have--you can download from here: http://www.jabsco.com/products/marine/toilet_waste_systems/waste_pumps/sealed_macerator_18590_series/iid_20/index.htm You might want to print it and keep it on the boat.

Weeelll...

I've always had an insatiable curiosity. When I needed to know how to solve problems on my own boat, and no one could tell me how, I dug until I found the solution. People who had similar problems started asking me how I solved 'em...and one thing just kinda led to another. After 20 years, I still don't know ALL the answers, but I do know most of 'em--at least the answers to the most common questions--and I know who to ask for the answers to the ones I haven't heard before. Everyone has to be good at something! :) Thanks for the compliment!

hi peggy, i just returned from boat and mission accomplished. it was a real simple repair although the macerator is installed right on a right angled wall so turning impella is a little tight.what is the average life span on impella? would it be logical to just replace in fall? thanks alan

I'd replace it now...and every spring

'Cuz impellers never fail when the tank is empty, only when the tank is full and you're 20 miles from the nearest pumpout. And, there's a better than even chance that trying to run it when the impeller was stuck cracked one of the vanes. Btw...you must be in open sea at least 3 miles from the nearest point on the whole US coastline to dump a tank legally...which means you'd have to be at least 3 miles SE of Fire Island to use the macerator.

hi peggie, as we had holding tank empty over winter. we have not used head at all. for testing puposes we had used h20 from hose. fortunetly we do have many pump out stations in our area and they are mostly free. have a great summer... alan

A suggestion

Tee your head intake line into your head sink drain. This will provide fresh water for flushing when you need it without risk of compromising your potable water supply. It'll also provide a means of flushing the sea water out of the whole system before the boat will sit...eliminating odors from stagnant sea water left to sit in the system.
