ALLCON I have a macerator that was never installed on my H-27 1990. I plan to install it according to the recommended method as posted by Peggie, see link, with one exception. I plan to add a 10 foot discarge hose attached to the discarge side of the pump with a valve at pump and a cap on the end of the hose. The lift would only only be 4 feet. I do not have pump out conviences close by therefore I use a portable tank to dispose of the waste. Has anyone else used this method or that could recommend a better approach? Jim

Should work...

Otoh, although it would be a bit more expensive, you might want to check out the Jabsco portable portable pumpout on wheels.

Macerator Install

I just recently installed a Jabsco macerator with Y-valve on my 1990 Hunter 33.5. My boat is fitted with a hand pump in the locker above the head and I decided to leave it in as a matter of convenience of not having to take it out and re-route new hose from the pump. I'm wondering if this is OK. And the other question I have is...the macerator pump discharge is 1" and the existing hose to the hand pump and seacock overboard is 1.5". I ran 1" hose from the macerator pump to a 1.5" to 1" reducer where it penetrates the bulkhead up to the hand pump. Seems complicated huh. I'm wondering if I can leave it as-is, or should I rip all that out and just run 1" hose from the macerator pump up to the vented loop and down to the 1.5" seacock with the reducer at the seacock. I'm curious if all those extra fittings and reducers is creating the odor in my head. Capn' Brent S/V Elena Lua http://www.elenalua.homestead.com

I'm a little confused...

You ran the discharge hose from the tank through both the macerator AND the manual pump? As a "matter of convenience?" By the time you installed all the hose and fittings to do that, it would have been easier just to run a new piece of hose from the macerator to the thru-hull. But as long as the manual pump isn't restricting the flow from the macerator, it should be ok. I doubt if all the fittings are the source of your odor, but the manual pump may be...especially if it's old, hasn't been used in a while, and hasn't ever been rebuilt. Odors are always strongest at their source...so if the odor is strongest in the locker where the pump is, the pump is the source. If you didn't replace old hose, it's likely that they've become permeated with odor. However, odor in the head (but nowhere else in the boat) is usually caused by sea water left to stagnate in the head intake. If it's especially strong for the first few flushes after the boat has sat for a while, that's the source. Or...when, if ever, was the last time the shower sump was cleaned? A dirty sump can smell like a sewer. Or...could be a combination of all of the above.
