Just purchased MacENC navigation software which has something called GRIB.

What is GRIB and will it function if our vessel is out of internet range?

Thanks

Ducati,

GRIB is the 'standard' weather information available on the web. You need to be connected to get 'today's' download but if you downloaded a week's worth yesterday it will work for the balance of the file.

Most navigation software has the ability to use the GRIB download and will automagically go to the correct website to grab the download.

There are four popular GRIB 'types': GFS 1, GFS 0.5, NWW3, and RTOFS. I prefer the GFS 1 but your mileage will vary.

I do hope that helps,

Jim

GRIB was developed to compactly transfer information about continuous fields of atmospheric parameters which can be represented in contour form. In other words things like pressure and temperature patterns.

GRIB weather files can also be directly downloaded via HF/SSB w/pactor modem from NOAA, etc.

If youre using MacENC youre probably using a 'mac'. If so, you can find quite detailed info for MacENC and GRIBs at: www,macsailing.net.
This site will also include many many other functions of Mac related and MacENC software and aux. devices including AIS, charting download options, etc. etc. etc. etc. Many of the 'auxiliaries' can be found from www.panbo.com a website that focuses on cutting-edge electronic navigation.
