I am looking to buy a Mac22. I put a class 3 tow bar on my Ford Explorer but I am not sure about the light/wires to hook up to the trailer. What do I need? I am in NJ. After I get insurance, do I go to the DMV to get registration, etc. How does it all work?

Mac22 trailer

I would check with a dealer for the wiring, although its more expensive. I would think an Explorer would be set up for adding trailer wires to its wiring harness, along with the optional socket. Most places do the cheap thing and splice into the tail wires, but on some cars this makes the idiot light come on for burned-out-bulb. Not sure if the trailer will have a title like the boat; if there isn't one, it may be covered by a bill of sale listing make and ID#. The trailer will have separate tags like another vehicle. Make sure your insurance covers trailers, or your boat insurance covers towing. Trailer lights are cheap and don't hold up long. Kits can be bought at boating stores, etc. The ID# for the Mac should be stamped into the transom (matching the one on the title) unless its older than about '73. Don't know specifically for NJ but someone here will. In Maryland, boat titles are handled by a different agency than car stuff.(Check out LED lights, they may be more foolproof than bulbs if available now.) Oh yeah, almost forgot the registration stuff. Find out about displaying the registration numbers on the hull and any other decals they may require.
