Hi all...
A while back I started a thread about the interior cleanup on my 1978 Mac 22; also included some info about the power winch we installed for the keel. Here's some pics as an update:
The original bulkhead and electrical panel that came with the boat. Pretty shabby. The power winch is visible through the original aperture for the mechanical winch.
The restored original bulkhead with new electrical panel, etc; fire extinguisher; and view / access panel for the winch.
Someone sent me an email a while ago asking to see the winch installation. Sorry for not replying sooner: I seldom visit that email account. Mounting the winch was a simple matter: used most of the original holes; had to drill one more, I think; used a plywood reinforcement; and replaced the missing splash tube on the winch cable tube. I'll mark the cable with some bright yellow and black paint stripes to indicate when it's in the retracted position.
Here's the changes to the winch mount at the companionway step. An extra hole, another stainless fastener, and sealed watertight.
That's about it. Pretty straightforward installation.
To avoid revisiting questions that came up the last time: (1) I'd rather have the original mechanical winch, but the company that makes them wouldn't ship it to Hawaii when I asked, so I went with what was available locally; (2) If the power winch fails, I'll deal with it. Nothing's infallible, but the winch is brand new and we expect it will last at least long enough to get us sailing.
So this is how it looks today. For expedience, I used the original bulkhead and went with the installation locations the PO made for the electrical and such. Don't really like it, but this will do to get us in the water and shake things down. Eventually, I plan to replace this bulkhead, install more bulkheads higher up in the aft cabin wall, and mount my electrical equipment up there.
Hope this helps.
VBR,
Pat
