I am trying to figure out what updates the 99 26x that I am looking at has. I read that all updates were performed after mid year 99, but this boat has a Oct 98 build date and is being sold as a 1999. Here is a URL for changes: http://www.macgregor26.com/changes_to_the_26.htm 1. Does anyone know when they changed the drain from the Port side to the Starboard side? The one I looked at has the drain on the Starboard and is controlled with just a short T handle. Would this be considered the later update ? 2. This boat has these additional obvious updates, CB panel mounted top inside Port Cabin entry, Vent moved to forward berth with dam built around it. 3. Still has unused hinged step where old vent was on previous models - does not have the later ladder entry with vestigial step removed. 4. Has the later White Hatch slides 5. I think it has the later table knobs. The two big things I am not sure about is the steering and the later style deck that eliminated the balsa supports and replaced it with molded beam fibreglass supports. How do I tell if I have these two updates. I opened up the Port side of the Pedestal and looked at the steering box mechanism , but I was not sure how to tell the old style "cable and drum" from the newer style "Rack and Pinion" and was wondering if someone could tell me how to tell the difference. What I see is a sheet metal affair with two tubes running out the bottom of the assembly which I assume drive the rudders. The sheet metal assembly loooks to be about 8 inches in diameter by about 2 inch deep. The steering mechanism does not appear to be long and thin as described on the update web site for the rack and pinion version. Thanks for any help. Don

The Changes

Mark, I was at that site , unfortunately it does not show a pic of the rack and pinion steering or mention how to tell if you have the molded beam fibreglass supports. I wish I had taken a pic of the steering box on Saturday when I had the Port side cover on the pedestal off. But like an idiot I didn't. -Don

Steering

If you have a drum it is most likely not rack and pinion. I looked at mine and it is more of a rectangle

Are you going to be sailing at Lake Jordan or at the Coast?

Decisions Decisions

Interesting Question. Presently we have a small scow stored at Jordan as we can't store it at our house. This puts us on a waiting list for a wet slip. Since the Mac will need a place to stay I have put the SCOW up for sale. I will than use the dry storage space for the Mac. I have no experience sailing on Jordan as the SCOW was brought down from NY and put on Jordan late in the fall and we never got it out to sail. But I am told that the area for sailing on Lake Jordan is somewhat limited. At least around the Marina. By the way, we also looked at Falls of the Neuse and Kerr. There actually were some slips available last year on Falls of the Neuse but than the water level was so low from the drought you really could not sail, and now it is so I high that people could not even get to their boats. How things change. I assume now that the water table is back down. Kerr seemed too far to drive from below Raleigh and Jordan is only about twenty minutes from my house. So... I believe we will sail on Jordan to familiarise ourselves with the Mac and than eventualy look into New Bern , Washington, or Oriental. We talked to a couple last fall that kept their Mac 26x in dry storage on Jordan and they seemed real happy there.
