Mac 26 Towing and Weight

Hello! I was thinking of getting a Macgregor 25, but they weigh about 3000 lbs- a little to heavy for my car. Someone told me the Macgregor 26 is lighter to tow because of the water ballast. Does anyone know how much they weigh dry on the trailer? I have a Subaru Forrester. Thanks for the help!

My 74 Mac 25 Venture weighs 2100..the newer Mac 26-x is 2250..empty..and most 26x's and 26m's are going to have more weight in add on's,than an older 25.

New Macgregor 26M-Weight(empty) 2550 lbsadd 221 lbs for a Honda 50Trailer weight 710 lbsThen you add all the misc. stuff-anchor,chain,coolers,etc.You don't want to tow a 26M with a Forrester-too much weight. I tow one with a Pilot and I can definitely tell it's back there!In a perfect world,I would say "Get a new 26M,then a new SUV to tow it!"

26S are considerably lighter

Mac 26S is considerably lighter. I want to say 1600 pounds+ trailer weight. I have always figured about 2200lbs total. Depending on your car it may be doable. I towed mine with my honda pilot and it was really easy.Lori

Towing

What is the largest Macgregor that a 98 V6 Ford Ranger 2WD could tow then? My towing distance would be about 2 miles each way to the lake from my backyard. I've been looking at 22 footers, but concerned about weight. My truck says 2,000 lbs and 200 lbs on the hitch. Has anyone gone over the limit and not bent anything?TomShopping for my mid-life crisis! ;-)

Towing a 26S

I tow a 26S with a Chevy Astro Van. My hitch says it is good to 5000#. I pulled it from Seattle to Montana (longest trip so far). I've pulled it around MT & WY quite a bit scince. The Astro has a large 6 clynder(4.0,I think). My Astro has all wheel drive. I think you could do ok with your rig, travelling only 2 miles. I think you would need to upgrade your hitch for longer trips. Another consideration is the steepness of the ramp you will be using. 4x4 sure helps with traction. Finally, you may already know that the different Mac 26 models do not wiegh the same. Lightest are the 26 D&S models. They are the same boat with different keels, sometimes refered to as 26 C, for classic. The 26X is a heavier boat, plus it is designed to carry a 40 or 50 horse outboard, adding even more weight. The 26M is similar, and is heavier yet as it has some fixed ballest as well as water ballest. You can see the specs on all these boats under "boat info" at this website.
