I have added a roller furling genoa jib to my Mac 25. The extra weight makes raising the mast a real problem. I would appreciate any suggestions on a mast raising system for this boat. Thanks. Parker

mast raising

Try either Blue Water Yachts (BWY) or MacGregor. I bought mine from MacGregor and it works great. 949-642-6830, ask for Bill. They are in California. I think it was $99 for the kit. Best money I ever spent.

M25 Mast Raising

My request was for information on a mast raising system for a 1985 MacGregor 25. J. Barrett replied helpfully by referring me to MacGregor and Blue Water Yachts, both of whom offer a mast raising system for the MacGregor 26 that can be adapted for the 25. Neither offers instructions on how to make the adaptation. Has anyone out there done this? Would you be willing to share info on how you did it? Thanks. Parker

Mac 25 Mast Raining System

The Blue Water M26 addapts to the Mac 25 quite easily. It is best to get the Mac 26 mast base because the winch fits the base and the mast raises easier. Their web site has pictures of the mast raising system at http://www.bwyachts.com/ You must place two ring bolts at right angles to the boat in line with the mast base. Since the M25 deck is domed, you must leave enough slack in the two 6 ft baby stays to allow them to stablilize but not to get too tight as you raise the mast. We used K-Mart single bolt boat winch eye bolts. The kit comes with instructions and is well worth the $100 cost.

Mac 25 mast raising eye bolt placement

Reply 3 is helpful. But how do I know where, precisely, do I place the two eye bolts that will stabilize the mast as it is being raised? Has anyone out there actually installed the Mac 26 mast raising system on a Mac 25, who can give me measurements on how far out from the mast step I should locate the eye bolts? Thank you, Parker

Kit

BWY sent an instruction pack when I got my kit. You can call them and ask.

Not That Hard to Figure Out

I installed the Mac mast raising kit from BWY on my 1982 25 about three years ago. The instructions that come with the kit are for the 26 and simply says if you are putting the kit on another boat you have to figure it out. The good news is the baby stays in the kit come with adjustable tangs so the placement isn't totally critical. You eyeball the heck out of it, measure once, measure twice and then start drilling the mast and the cabin top. Having a friend working with you can help get you through the fear factor. The installation took about four hours after removing the old mast step and filling all the old holes in preparation for installing the new hinged mast step.

M25 measurements

Parker, If you want to e-mail me at jjbar96@hotmail.com I will take photos and measurements of the kit on my 25. I got the kit, and a hinged mast step from MacGregor. I have read posts about needing to put blocks under the deck fittings to bring them up some, etc. My fittings are bolted to the deck, the baby stays to the mast. I leave the stays on although it wouldn't take much to put a shackle at the top to make them easy to remove. I leave a little slack in the stays but only because the mast crutch is slightly to starboard of center so I need to allow the mast some movement when it comes down. The kt I have uses a block and tackle and not a winch but works fine and takes little space to store. The key, I believe, to the baby stays is to mount them in line with the pivot point of the mast. In my case this is the hinge point of the mast step. Mine works great.
