I have two questions related to my Universal M3-20 in my 1992 C-30. I recently purchased the boat and noticed that there is a small red wire from the solenoid than runs to the instrument panel that looks like has been intentionally cut. The engine does start and run. What could this be? Also I have a key switch ignition with the glow plug all the way to the right and a push button starter. When I turn the key to the glow plug position and try and push the starter button there doesn't seem to be enough battery power to turn the engine over. It will usually start if I release the glow plug and just push the starter button. Is it neccessary to have the glow plugs on when I push the start button?

Glow plug -- starter

The starter should work with the glow plugs on, although you usually don't have to do both together. You obviously have a voltage loss somewhere along the line. One of the Universal weaknesses is in the connectors on the engine wiring harness. There are usually two, one near the instrument panel and the other near the engine. These connectors are thare to facilitate assembly at the factory. One guy puts the engine in, one guy installs the panel and all that's left is to hook the two together with plugs at either end of a bunch of wires. These connectors are prone to oxidation resulting in high resistance and the concomitant loss of power where you want it. Although your problem could be the result of a power loss in many other places, including your batteries, cleaning the two connectors usually does the trick. I can't say off hand what the cut red wire was. To which terminal at the starter solenoid did it connect? If the wire is about 3/16" OD, it is the main power to your cockpit panel. Talk about a power loss!

Selinoid wire

I have a 27' 1986 Universal Diesel There is a 20 amp fuse which is on the engine attached to selinoid/starter I found about it when the engine wouldn't start. Found no mention in any manual except on Catalina electrical schematic drawing.Good luck
