I launched a week ago and finally got down to the boat for Memorial Day. It was great to be on the water again! But I ran into some problems. While motoring out of the harbor (15 minutes), the engine seemed to lose power and almost stalled. There was no smoke, the temp was fine and she was pushing lots of water overboard. I dropped the anchor and investigated. The oil level was fine, and fuel was 3/4 of a tank. We headed back to the mooring and had to drop anchor a couple of times because the engine kept losing power. At low speeds we were able to make it back to the mooring. At the mooring I didn't have a problem while idling or when I put her under load in reverse. I'd appreciate your help in resolving this problem. Thanks in Advance!

Check your fuel system

Start by checking your primary and secondary fuel flters. Some dirt may be clogging the lines somewhere. Also, you might try bleeding your air lines to see if there is any trapped air getting into the fuel system. Check your injectors as well to check to see if they may be clogged. Last check would be your fuel quality. You may have some algea or dirt in your fuel. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh C-36 #560

Fuel check

I recently learned from an old mechanic a good way to check fuel flow. I was having a problem with a rough running M25. Install a short piece of clear plastic hose between the fuel filter and the primary fuel pump. This will give you an instant reading on any air intrusion or other flow problem, which is usually the cause of diesel malfunction. When conditon is corrected, remove the clear plastic, but save for the next problem. [I found I had a minute air leak from a bad hose connection] Good sailing RON B
