All you fellow Universal M-18 owners out there, I need your help. I have a Sherwood type impeller on my engine and wanted to verify the direction the impeller rotates. I guess the Universal with the other type is likely to rotate in the same direction as well. Anyway, the engine was winterized by the previous owner and I wanted to make sure I re-install it correctly. I understand the blades will face opposite the direction of rotation. 2nd question- Is there some type of paper gasket that is supposed to be placed between the impeller and the outer housing that gets screwed back on? If so, does anyone know the replacement part # or where to get one? It looks like the inside face of my impeller cover is scored and has to be buffed down to make it smooth again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

here: http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/universal/shopping/ 1. I don't remember which way it turns, info on boat, perhaps someone else is closer 2. You need a paper gasket in addition to the metal cover. Use the website to buy or better yet, simply make your own as many of us do - just use the material from a brown paper bag - use the tinner type, not the thick stuff from a shopping bag. Just use the face of the open pump as a template.

I think the impeller gets rotated clockwise, & I recall it becomes apparent when you do the install, as (about half) the blades need to be bent via that rotation to fit into the pump housing. As for the gasket, if you purchase the sherwood replacement impeller (kit?), it comes with the paper gasket in the package. Also I faintly recall there is a warning about pulling too hard on the impeller shaft/rod (that connects to the motor), as it could disconnect if you pull too hard attempting to get the old impeller off. Good luck!
