Last year the turnbuckles had a mind of their own. They did not turn easily and when it came time to adjust they would just spring back to where I started. I'm thinking that a bit of lube will do the trick. Just what kind of lube will work? Something that will not get on the sails is best right? Thanks

I use Lanocote. It's made for just what you described. One small cotainer will last you a long, long time.

cheap baby-butt lanolin

Yes, lanolin is the stuff (use to lube the sail tracks as well). BUT don't pay the rediculous prices they charge for 'Sailing' stuff, simply go to any pharmacy etc and by the lanolin used on babies bottms, same stuff, less than half the price.

If your turnbuckles...

... spring back to their previous position, it usually means that one end is not turning. Try putting one wrench on the flat of the stud swaged to the wire to make sure it does not turn when you adjust the turnbuckle body with either a screw driver or another wrench. If you add twist to the wire by turning the turnbuckle without stabilizing the wire you are asking for trouble. As far are lubing the turnbuckles goes, about twice per season I use a spray lube with a tube-like nozzle like Boeshield T-9 and just walk around the boat and spray all the turnbuckles. Takes about 5 min and prevents galling.
