I've a Yanmar 2GM20F and a 4-stroke Suzuki DF2.5 OBM. Q1)I want to just carry 1 type of luboil that is suited for both the Yanmar diesel and the Suzuki 4-stroke obm. If I could find a luboil that is rated for API-CD as well as API-SE does it mean its ok to be used for both? Q2)Mobil-1 is fully Synthetic, its spec fits both engines, can I use it? Q3)the Yanmar gearbox calls for SAE-30, can I use SAE 15W40 instead since the multigrade luboil covers the SAE-30 range ? Thank you.

1. you can use any diesel rated oil in a gas engine as well as any dual-use oil. 2. Same thing for synthetic oil as long as it is similarly rated for diesels. 3. 15W40 is not equivalent to straight 30 weight oil. Also, most multi-viscosity oils are detergent oils which can foam in the tranny which isn't a good thing. Althoug many have done what you propose, it's not recommended by the mfg.

Rotella T 15-40

I attended the Yanmar diesel seminar. The Yanmar factory mechanic said Shell Rotella T 15-40 was a very good choice and can also be used in the tranny. I have been using it and changing the engine oil at 50 hours and the tranny at 100 hours. No problems yet although I only have about 600 hours which is just sort of break-in. I have only been averaging 200 hours a year.

In agreement on the oil

I am in agreement with others for the engine oil. Rotella T would be a good choice for the Yanmar and the Suzuki. But would not use a multi grade in the tranny, for the reasons stated.

Oil

Looks like you really need to carry three oils...I use Shell Rotella 15W40 in my Yanmar (and diesel truck), straight 30W in the transmission (that's what it calls for), and I'd put whatever the manual says to use in the Suzuki.

mobil 1

while I like Mobil 1 and use it in my cars I think that yanmar does not recommend synthetic oil (unless they have changed there recommendations lately) So based on that the Mobil 1 is out. (at least if it were my boat)
